Monk: The Inner Sanctuary
A Monk discussion topic

Basic Questions
If you have questions about the Monk class please post them here, maybe someone of the guild can give you an answer.
If no one answers your question and/or you find your answer somewhere else please post your findings here, so others can benefit from it.
When you are posting an answer please quote the original question in your post, even if it is your question.

Builds Showcase
If you find/make a build and you feel like sharing it, post it here.
Please try to include a brief description, for example what is trying to accomplish, what kind of items (itemization) we should be using with it, how we supposed to play it, etc.
If you have suggestions on someone’s build, please quote at least the original build link.

Everything Else General Monk Discussion/Thoughts/Feelings/Theorycrafting/etc
You can use this topic if you like, but if you think your post needs its own topic feel free to make one.

Hotfixes/Changes

I will try to keep the two following posts updated.
The first post it’s going to be a summary of all the basic questions and their answers found in this topic for easy reference.
The second will serve as index with links to all builds showcases in this topic.
If I miss or forget something please send me a PM so I can sort it out.

Basic Questions and Answers

Dual Wield, 2-Handed or 1-Handed and Shield? What is the difference?
Dual Wielding equals to fast week attacks. More attacks equal more Spirit. If for any reason the number of attacks you perform benefits your build or your build needs a lot of Spirit you should dual wielding.
2-Handed equals to slow stronger attacks. Fewer attacks equal less Spirit.
I haven’t try 1-Handed and Shield yet.

Should I always use exactly one of each type of skills (Primary/Secondary/Defensive/Techniques/Focus/Mantras)?
No. Feel free to use whatever combination of skills you like, but make sure you have at least one Primary skill to generate Spirit. That is true for all classes, the use of more than one skill of each category, but to be able to do that you must enable the Effective Mode under the Gameplay Options.

Spirit Healing
build link

The basic concept is that you are healing your self with each attack and each time you spending spirit.

Crippling Wave and Sweeping Wind is your damaging abilities; try to keep Sweeping Wind up as much as you can. Use Dashing Strike and Seven-Sided Strike to move fast around and avoid special attacks or get back into the fight. Also use Serenity to fast heal yourself and be invulnerable for a sort period of time. You can use whatever Mantra you like but since you have Transcendence and + life after hit on your items probably you don’t need the Healing one. Chant of Resonance is providing you with some spirit regeneration but it’s not mandatory. Seize the Initiative is completely optional.

You should dual wielding for more/faster attacks and you need + attack speed and + life after hit on your items.

This build is completely crap if your enemies have any sort of CC, if you cannot attack them you are dead.

I think Monks and Barbs become pretty gimped at the harder difficulty levels. Beyond act 1 inferno you basically can't even risk getting into melee range of Champion/Rare packs which means killing them is pretty tricky since you can't hit them.

As impressive as that video is, they didn't kill any trash/mobs before it, they simply ran, died, rez'd continually until the reached the boss.
